AISI 1045 Medium Carbon Steel CNC Material
AISI 1045 is the industry standard for Medium Carbon Steel. With a carbon content of approximately 0.45%, it bridges the gap between the ductility of low-carbon mild steel (1018) and the extreme strength of alloy steels. This chemistry allows 1045 to be heat-treated for high surface hardness while maintaining a tough core. At JUCHENG, we utilize 1045 extensively for high-stress mechanical components. From turning precision hydraulic piston rods to milling heavy-duty gears, our facility leverages the superior strength and wear resistance of 1045 to deliver durable parts for the automotive and heavy equipment sectors.
1045 Medium Carbon Steel
JUCHENG's 1045 Machining Capabilities
To maximize the performance of medium carbon steel, we offer specialized processing:
- Precision Turning: 1045 is most commonly used for rotational parts. Our CNC lathes produce long, straight shafts and axles with tight runout tolerances.
- Wärmebehandlung: Unlike 1018, 1045 responds well to heat treatment. We offer Through-Hardening (Quench & Temper) and Induction Hardening to create wear-resistant bearing surfaces (up to 55 HRC).
- Schleifen: For hardened shafts requiring H7/g6 fits, we perform cylindrical grinding post-heat-treatment to ensure perfect dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
- Weld Control: Welding 1045 requires care. We employ specific pre-heating and post-weld controlled cooling procedures to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Advantages of CNC Machining 1045
| Vorteil | Detaillierte Beschreibung | Hauptvorteil |
| Higher Strength | Significantly higher tensile and yield strength than 1018 or A36. | Can withstand heavier loads and torque without deformation. |
| Heat Treatability | Can be flame or induction hardened. | Ideal for parts requiring a hard wear surface (like gear teeth) but a tough core. |
| Gute Zerspanbarkeit | Machines well (approx. 55% rating), producing broken chips. | Offers a good balance between manufacturing cost and part performance. |
| Wear Resistance | Harder surface than mild steel even in the normalized state. | Suitable for sliding parts, guide rods, and wear plates. |
| Cost Efficiency | More expensive than 1018 but cheaper than alloy steels (4140). | The economical choice for high-strength axles and bolts. |
Technische Parameter & Materialnormen
We process 1045 to meet global equivalent standards:
| Güteklasse | Spezifikation | Eigenschaften & Ideale Verwendungen |
| AISI 1045 | Medium Carbon | Characteristics: Delivered in Hot Rolled or Cold Drawn conditions. Good impact resistance in the normalized state. Uses: Crankshafts, axles, connecting rods, pump shafts, studs. |
| C45 / 1.0503 | European Grade | Characteristics: The standard European medium carbon steel. Identical application range. Uses: Hydraulic cylinders, machine gears, heavy-duty pins. |
CNC Machining Guidelines for 1045
- Cutting Conditions: 1045 requires more power to machine than 1018. We use coated carbide inserts and rigid setups to handle the cutting forces.
- Oberflächenbeschaffenheit: Turned finishes on 1045 are typically very good, often better than gummy low-carbon steels.
- Welding Caution: Due to higher carbon, 1045 is brittle if cooled too fast after welding. Pre-heating (200°C-300°C) is mandatory for structural welds.
- Hardening: Induction hardening is preferred for shafts to minimize distortion compared to furnace quenching.
Anwendungsszenarien
- Automobil: Axles, crankshafts, steering knuckles, worm gears.
- Hydraulics: Cylinder rods, piston heads, rams, valve bodies.
- Industrial Machinery: Conveyor rollers, drive shafts, crushing hammers.
- Fasteners: High-strength bolts, studs, turnbuckles (Grade 5 equivalent).
- Tooling: Die sets, guide pillars, mold bases.
