ASTM A514 Steel Plate CNC Machining
ASTM A514 is a high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate intended for use in structural applications where high yield strength and low weight are critical. Often referred to by trade names like T-1, this material offers a minimum yield strength of 100,000 psi (690 MPa), which is nearly three times that of standard A36 mild steel. At JUCHENG, we specialize in processing heavy-gauge A514 plates. From plasma/laser cutting to precision CNC milling of mounting faces and bore holes, we deliver robust components for the crane, mining, and heavy construction industries that can withstand massive loads without deformation.

JUCHENG's A514 Fabrication Capabilities
Processing high-hardness steel plate requires specialized machinery and tooling strategies. We offer:
- Heavy Plate Processing: Our facility handles A514 plates in thicknesses ranging from 6mm to over 150mm. We combine thermal cutting (Laser/Plasma) with CNC machining to produce net-shape parts.
- Hard Milling: A514 is tough (approx. 30 HRC). We use high-torque mills and advanced carbide inserts to face-mill and drill this material efficiently without work hardening.
- Weld Preparation: Since A514 is designed to be welded, we provide precision CNC beveling and edge preparation services to ensure perfect weld joints for your final assembly.
- Flatness Control: Quenched plates can contain residual stress. We employ stress-relieving strategies and skim cutting techniques to maintain flatness on large machined baseplates.
Advantages of CNC Machining A514
| Vorteil | Detaillierte Beschreibung | Hauptvorteil |
| High Yield Strength | Guaranteed minimum yield of 100 ksi (690 MPa). | Allows for thinner sections to carry the same load as mild steel, reducing overall equipment weight. |
| Good Weldability | Specifically engineered to be weldable despite its high strength. | Perfect for fabricated structural assemblies like booms and frames. |
| Impact Resistance | Excellent toughness at low temperatures. | Performs reliably in outdoor environments (cranes, bridges) without brittle fracture. |
| Abrasion Resistance | Harder surface than mild steel. | Offers better wear life for earth-moving equipment and chutes. |
| Kosteneffizienz | High strength-to-weight ratio allows for material savings. | Lower shipping weight and fuel consumption for the final vehicle/machine. |
Technische Parameter & Materialnormen
A514 comes in several grades (A, B, E, F, H, etc.) depending on plate thickness, but properties remain consistent:
| Güteklasse | Spezifikation | Eigenschaften & Ideale Verwendungen |
| ASTM A514 | Quenched & Tempered | Characteristics: Low carbon alloy steel. Heat treated to achieve high strength. Hardness range 235 - 293 HBW. Maintains mechanical properties in sections up to 6 inches thick. Uses: Lifting lugs, crane booms, mining truck frames, bridge components. |
CNC Machining Guidelines for A514
- Zerspanbarkeit: Rated at about 35-40% of B1112. It requires 30% more power to machine than mild steel.
- Bohren: Requires heavy-duty cobalt or carbide drills. Feed pressure must be high to keep the tool cutting rather than rubbing.
- Kühlmittel: Flood coolant is recommended to dissipate the significant heat generated during cutting.
- Welding Caution: While weldable, it requires specific low-hydrogen electrodes and controlled heat input to prevent cracking in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). We machine weld preps to exact angles to facilitate this.
Anwendungsszenarien
- Heavy Construction: Crane booms, mobile platforms, excavator buckets.
- Mining: Dump truck bodies, chute liners, structural supports.
- Lifting Equipment: Heavy-duty lifting lugs, spreader bars, forklift forks.
- Infrastructure: Bridge structural members, large machine bases.
